Study on Accident Severity in Naypyitaw-Mandalay Expressway

Naypyitaw-Mandalay Expressway is the portion of the Yangon-Mandalay National Highway and many road users are using this Expressway now. At present traffic road accident is increasing year by year along this route. To reduce injuries in road crashes, better understanding is needed between the relationship of injury severity and risk factors. The main purpose of the study is to identify the black spot locations and the factors affecting the severity of accidents along the Naypyitaw-Mandalay Expressway. The road accident data is collected from 2013 to 2017. The data used in the study is obtained from Ministry of Construction. Accident Severity Index method is used to find the black spot locations. The results reveal hazardous road locations and black spot ranking along the route. This study seeks to identify the contributing factors affecting crash severity using Ordered Probit Model. The results show that the improper crossing and turning of cars and cycles, over speed, class two vehicles, single car accident collision, weekday, age between 55 and 64, collision with pedestrians, cycles, animals, barriers, median and other fixed objects are the factors affecting accident severity in Naypyitaw-Mandalay Expressway. The study attempts to find out the causative factors for accident and suggests measures to prevent accidents in future.
