Statistical Optimization of Soda Ash Preparation Using Box-Behnken Experimental Design

In this research, soda ash was prepared by Solvay process and response surface methodology was employed for optimization and analysis of soda ash. The composition of 5 % salt solution was analyzed by EDTA titration method, complexometric titration method, and AOAC method. Salt purification process was carried out by sedimentation process. The optimal condition of soda ash was determined to achieve maximum yield % with variable parameters such as molar ratio of salt to ammonium hydroxide, salt to carbon dioxide gas and reaction time. Second order polynomial equation was applied to identify the optimum level of output variables. The maximum yield percent of 19.882 % was achieved by the optimum condition of salt to ammonium hydroxide to carbon dioxide of (1:3:6.8) at a reaction time of 1.50 hr. The synthesized soda ashes were analyzed by X-rays diffraction (XRD), Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR).
